The Kindle has turned the way we buy and read books around, and Amazon did a very good job of sustaining even its previous e-reader models. Today, however, you still have the opportunity to download and buy new books on the first-ever Kindle, which was released almost 20 years ago.

Unfortunately, it seems that all good things must come to an end. Amazon has now officially confirmed that Kindles published prior to 2012 will be pulled, and although you can still read books on them, you will be off the Amazon Store altogether.

In an email to The Verge, an Amazon spokesperson confirmed that, on May 20th, 2026, devices released before 2013 will no longer be able to purchase, borrow, or download new titles from the Amazon Store. The books that you have already downloaded will not be lost, and the device will continue to be an e-reader; however, new titles will be more difficult to add to it.

The following is the list of affected Kindle models in detail:

Kindle 1st Generation (2007)

Kindle DX and DX Graphite (2009 and 2010)

Kindle Keyboard (2010)

Kindle 4 (2011)

Kindle Touch (2011)

Kindle 5 (2012)

A Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation (2012) is the device that will be the subject.

Kindle Fire 1st Gen (2011)

Kindle Fire 2nd Gen (2012)

Kindle Fire HD 7 (2012)

Kindle Fire HD 8.9 (2012)

Should you still love your older Kindle and you are not ready to part with it yet, it should be mentioned that there are other means to add new ebooks to it without referring to the Amazon Store.
